Interview w Mtl’s Magasin ~ New Blue Fun Cafe

Welcome to our inaugural SHY blog interview series to grow our community and shine a light on some amazing businesses I look up to!

When I moved to Montreal a year ago I knew I was about to level up on two things ~ food and fashion. The city is filled with some of the best in terms of small businesses and the chicest cafes. Every time I return to the city after travelling, there’s a cool new pop-up or cafe opened. I literally love it since Montreal’s just like New York or Paris ~ we adore cafe culture.

Reason #1 ~ I love a space for community to come together to share some good food and drinks and conversation

Reason #2 ~ I’m inspired seeing someone’s unique idea and imagination turn into a reality and a real business/brand

Drumroll please…. just like I said, the day after I came back from Portugal, I saw a blue cafe all over my instagram feed. Meet Mmmmagasin (mr + mrs m magasin) magasin is french for store, a new cute cafe in little burgundy, montreal run by the sweetest couple. It’s decorated to perfection with hints of blue all over the space filled with international brands. Matt and Jess (the owners) make some refreshing drinks, serve up delicious pastries, love collaborating with community and offer dream coaching!

  1. Give us the 411! Who are the founders Matt and Jess?
We are a couple of people loving Canadians originally from the interior of BC who have lived all over the place but most recently in Bordeaux, France which sparked our desire to lean french hence moving to Montreal. One thing you should know about us is that we already love you before you even come in.

  2. Tell us about Mmmmagasin and why you started?

We have both worked in coffee and small businesses for 10+ years and love the community formed around these places so we started this little magasin as a way to connect with people while selling things from craftspeople all over the world. Dream coaching is also a huge part of the space and you can find out more at dreamcoaching.ca

  3. What are your current favourite things on the menu?

Matt: easy, a pour over and a cardamon knot. I could literally do this everyday.

Jess: I’m a big tea lover and we use some really nice tea here, from a shop in Budapest but the tea is from all over Asia. Really enjoying the iced honey orchid oolong on these hot days, very delicate and naturally sweet.

  4. What are your favourite travels and best cafes?
This could be multiple paragraphs but in short we would say Hip Hop cafe in Copenhagen for coffee and friendly people. Panshop in Bordeaux has literally the best croissant I’ve ever had. Blysk espresso bar in Warsaw is also a top spot.

  5. What are five of your favourite Montreal spots?
In no particular order: Hof Kelsten, Bref boutique, Cafe Even, Cafe Eclair, Epicerie Basta.

  6. If mmmmagasin could collaborate on a shy world piece, what would it be?

I think a fun woven scarf would be super fun or a hat of course!

Love,
Matt + Jess
