SHY City Guide ~ Tulum, Mexico

hi everyone <3

welcome to the next SHY city guide and I’m so excited to highlight an absolute favourite tulum , mexico. this year I said I was determined to start travelling again more and set five countries as the end goal. I was so lucky to go to tulum with two of my best friends and we had the best time ever. tulum is such a special place with beaches and jungles and the best local community where you bike around to explore. if you are currently reading our explore page and supporting my brand thank you so much ~ hope you stay awhile!

tulum is definitely an exotic destination luckily close to canada for me with a high low contrast between beach clubs and two dollar tacos (the most authentic tasty two dollar tacos though). it has that bali vibe in the high end areas lined with beach clubs serving the best ceviches and olive oil ice creams definitely hogging “good beach”. on the flip side you must rent bikes and wander around town eating where locals eat exploring all the offerings. we loved hanging out near the lush resorts sunbathing on the beach and ordering overpriced cocktails because whatever it’s VACATION. we also absolutely loved biking into the town eating elote, drinking horchata from the street vendors and you know it’s good cause locals are there too. oh a non negotiable is eating as much fresh fruit from the street corner stands especially the fresh mango!! overall I adore tulum despite it being popular and a bit touristy, you can still experience it like a local. I think the no skips are definitely the following on top of the endless beaches and cenotes and eating and exploring:

  1. ado bus ~ ok first things first, the cheapest easiest way to get to tulum once landing in cancun

  2. mayan monkey hostel ~ a fun affordable hostel where you meet people if you’re not balling out for beach or jungle villas

  3. green tip bike rentals ~ we loved our bikes which came with baskets and rented them for the whole time there

  4. collectivo ~ local bus that can take you around to all the hot spots like cenotes or parks

  5. niken beach club ~ there are dozens of really perfect beach clubs! We loved this one, the ocean was unreal

  6. dos ojos cenotes ~ there are also dozens of cenotes so research! we had lotta fun going to this one

  7. tulum beach tattoo ~ it’s my little tradition to get tattoos when I travel and this spot’s perfect so ask for alan

  8. matcha mama (vegan) ~ who doesn’t want aesthetic ice matchas and acai bowls right in the jungle otw to the beach?

  9. antojitos ~ we did our research and hands down the best tacos in town where the locals eat (super cheap yet delicious)

  10. tulum avenue ~ it’s lined all the way with local vendors selling the mexican delicacies in their street food

  11. mayan ruins ~ on the relaxing vacations, we need lil fieldtrips visiting these extraordinary attractions with so much history

  12. playa maya at tulum national park ~ this is a core memory sunburned in my brain! tanning on the beach, swimming with my best friends

  13. la guarida ~ my tattoo artist alan actually recommended this spot and we were obsessed… picture jungle tree house with the best drinks and unique desserts to taste

love,
dove
